Newswire: The Tupac biopic has a new director, again

According to The Hollywood Reporter, music video and commercial director Benny Boom is in negotiations to direct the long-gestating Tupac Shakur biopic. Other directors previously attached to the project include Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), John Singleton (Boyz In The Hood), and Carl Frankin (Devil In A Blue Dress).

After five years, Morgan Creek is finally in a rush to make the movie, as the music rights will revert back to Shakur’s mother, Afeni Shakur, at the end of the year if the film isn’t in production. This might explain why the studio has gone from courting directors like John Singleton to tapping the guy who helmed the Smack That music video. It also doesn’t help that Singleton, after leaving the project last spring, trash-talked Morgan Creek on Instagram—the preferred forum for airing grievances—saying that “the people involved aren’t really respectful of the legacy of …
