Newswire: The Coens are writing a movie about the online black market

Joel and Ethan Coen have signed on for another tale of the human animal’s unfailing knack for satisfying its basest urges, with Screen Rant reporting that the Oscar-winning duo will write the script for a film about the deep web black market known as Silk Road. Dark Web will be based on a 2015 Wired piece by Joshuah Bearman, tracking the rise of Ross Ulbricht, known on the online marketplace he created as “Dread Pirate Roberts.”

Before his arrest in 2013, Ulbricht’s site allowed users to trade contraband substances—mostly drugs—outside of the government’s watchful eye. He’s currently serving a life sentence in jail with no possibility of parole, after being convicted on counts of money laundering, computer hacking, conspiracy to traffic fraudulent identity documents, and conspiracy to traffic narcotics in 2015.
