Newswire: R.I.P. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata

Satoru Iwata, the president of Nintendo, has died. That’s according to a brief statement released by the video game company, which says, “Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth.” He was 55.

Iwata joined Nintendo in 2000, and became the company’s president in 2002 when his predecessor, Hiroshi Yamauchi, stepped down. He was only the fourth president in Nintendo’s history. In 2013, he became the CEO of Nintendo’s English-language branch, Nintendo Of America, and he pushed for an increased focus on smaller, more personable announcement events that were a direct contrast to the dramatic fanfare that most video game companies bring out when they want fans to pay attention to them.
