Newswire: Patti Lupone returns as series regular for Penny Dreadful season 3

Patti Lupone was affecting as a strange old crone known as the Cut-Wife in “Nightcomers,” a strong stand-alone episode of last season’s Penny Dreadful that focuses on how Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) came to cultivate her own dark powers. Deadline reports that Lupone will return for season three as a series regular. Instead of playing a brusque rural witch, Lupone will portray Dr. Seward, an American therapist treating Ms. Ives (Eva Green) with an “unconventional new approach.”

Given that Ives was already subjected to some horrible asylum experiences, and given the program’s 1890s setting, one could hope that Seward would attempt the less invasive, cutting-edge practice of Freudian psychotherapy. More likely, however, the character will be based in part on Dr. Jack Seward, the insane asylum administrator from Bram Stroker’s Dracula.
