Newswire: Lin-Manuel Miranda’s other Broadway hit might be coming to movie screens
Finally! Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony-winning street-music-infused hit Broadway musical looks like it will actually be getting adapted for screens in the near future. Wait, no—not Hamilton. We won’t be getting that for about 20 years. The one that The Wrap reports is currently being developed by the Weinstein Company is Miranda’s 2005’s In The Heights. Using in the language of hip-hop, salsa, and soul, the show follows the tangled lives of the residents of Manhattan’s predominantly Latino Washington Heights neighborhood over the course of three sweltering summer days.
Jon M. Chu—director of 2015’s disappointing throwback Jem And The Holograms and the surprisingly respected 2011 tour documentary Justin Bieber: Never Say Never—is reportedly in talks to take the helm on this adaptation. It’s unknown if Miranda will reprise his lead role as bodega owner Usnavi.
