In 1964, when a bunch of young people were screaming like crazy over The Beatles’ appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, who could’ve predicted that, more than 50 years later, one of those Beatles would be writing little jingles to play alongside animated Skype emoji? Nobody, because then they also would’ve predicted the internet, Skype itself, and emoji in general. But that’s what makes this news so fascinating. It is, in short, utterly bananas.

This comes from Pitchfork, which reports that Paul McCartney recorded a handful of five-second tunes to go alongside a new batch of Valentine’s Day-related emoji being introduced by Skype. In a post on his official website, McCartney describes the process as “a great laugh” that was also “challenging,” due to how little time he had to convey the particular emotion of each little cartoon thing in his music.
