Great Job, Internet!: Ava DuVernay tweets about her Straight Outta Compton experience
Selma director Ava DuVernay is not only a filmmaker in her own right, she’s also a huge supporter of black cinema. For instance, she founded the African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement (AFFRM) as a grassroots way to distribute the work of black independent filmmakers. And since DuVernay also happens to be both a native of Compton, California and a hip-hop fan it’s safe to say that Straight Outta Compton is right in her wheelhouse.
After seeing the film earlier this week, DuVernay took to Twitter to share her experience, praise director F. Gary Gray, and discuss the complicated reality of being a female hip-hop fan:
When your 82 year old grandmother wants to go see STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON for her birthday, you know something’s going on. Damn, @FGaryGray!
